GeekCon Croatia - Experience
Last year's Croatian GeekCon was an unforgettable experience: Mynthara cosplay attended the event in person as a judge in the cosplay competition and got to experience the exciting convergence of cosplay, gaming, and geek culture up close. This blog is an honest account of the previous event, the atmosphere, the community, and the inspiring moments. It is particularly interesting that this year she will not only be attending as a visitor, but we will also be at GeekCon with the Cosplay Workshop, where we look forward to seeing you!
There are events you simply visit.
And then there are those where you truly arrive.
For me, the Croatian Geekcon was exactly that.
GeekCon is a science fiction convention held in Velika Gorica, Croatia. Their mission is to get children and young people interested in science fiction through our convention. Therefore, we strongly support cosplay because I think that through it, young people develop a lot of skills that are useful in life. From problem-solving skills to social awareness.
The Geek team is made up of highly motivated people who want to take their conventions to the next level. There will be a lot of workshops and activities at the convention for children and adults.
I attended it for the first time last February, and from the very first moment, it was clear that this was not an average geek event. It was a truly exhilarating sci-fi gathering, where classic geek culture, anime, and comics blended naturally and in perfect harmony. The entire event radiated the feeling that it wasn’t “just” organised, it was created with heart and soul.
Geekcon grew out of the initiative of a local group of friends: it comes from true fans and is made for fans. This was visible in every detail. The organisers worked with incredible dedication to ensure that visitors were not merely spectators, but active participants in this world.
The event lasted two days and was filled with an amazing atmosphere throughout. For me, the experience was even more special because I attended not only as a visitor but also as a jury member and guest. During the day, various panel discussions took place, and I had the chance to meet many talented Croatian, Bulgarian, and international cosplayers. It was truly inspiring to see how much creative energy could gather in one place.
One of my absolute favourite highlights was the massive Star Wars set, which recreated the interior of a classic Imperial starship. Stepping into this space felt like being transported, even if only for a moment, into a galaxy far, far away. Alongside the set was an impressive weapons exhibition featuring numerous iconic replicas, including the E-11 blaster rifle, the stormtroopers’ popular DLT-19 heavy blaster, Boba Fett’s rifle, and many other legendary pieces from the films and series.
On the afternoon of the first day, the cosplay competition judging took place, which I truly enjoyed. My fellow judges were highly professional, and the competitors included countless impressive cosplayers showcasing outstanding craftsmanship. The competition itself was held on a large, professional stage, a dream setting for any performer. The audience was incredibly enthusiastic and appreciative, further elevating the experience for everyone involved.
The marketplace area also offered a rich selection, with handmade crafts and memorabilia vendors lining the space, allowing everyone to take home a special keepsake.
On both days, in addition to the Star Wars photo wall, there was an Arcane-themed photo area, where visitors could take pictures inside a life-size recreation of Silco’s office, a true highlight for many attendees.
The second day had a more relaxed, intimate atmosphere. Workshops and engaging presentations filled the schedule, and there was much more opportunity to connect deeply and actively engage with the Croatian cosplay community.
For me, Croatian Geekcon was not just an event, but an inspiring community experience. A place where passion becomes tangible, and where you are not merely a visitor, but part of the world itself.
